What is Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion is a safe and effective way to end your pregnancy. The procedure is done in a clinic by a doctor or nurse trained to perform abortions. It’s performed in the first trimester of pregnancy with an instrument that sucks out the fetus through the cervix.

Is surgical abortion painful?

Surgical abortion is not painful, it is a very quick procedure. You will be given some pain medication before the procedure to help you relax, but this is not required and most women do not need it.

Does having a surgical abortion affect my fertility?

No. It’s important to know that a surgical abortion doesn’t affect your ability to get pregnant in the future. This is because it does not involve any kind of cutting or surgery inside the uterus

How does the medical staff know I am ready for the procedure?

Before the abortion procedure begins, the medical staff will ask you to confirm that you understand what will happen. They may also ask you some questions about your health history. This screening helps ensure that you are fit for surgery.

What can I expect before my procedure?

  • You will be asked to give consent or sign a consent form.

  • will have an ultrasound to determine the size of the fetus.

  • You will be asked to empty your bladder.

What happens during the procedure?

When you go to the clinic or doctor’s office for your surgical abortion, you will talk with a counsellor about the procedure.

The doctor will use one of two methods to perform the abortion:

  • Aspiration abortion—A small tube is inserted into your uterus through your vagina, and suction removes the pregnancy tissue from your uterus. You may feel mild cramping during this procedure but no pain. The procedure takes less than 10 mins.

  • Surgical method—Using thin surgical instruments, called forceps, doctors remove tissue from inside your uterus. This method can take up to 20 minutes longer than suction aspiration.

What is recovery like?

You should be able to do normal activities within a few days after your surgical abortion. You may experience light bleeding for a few days but it won’t last longer than 14 days.
