Abortion Clinic Johannesburg-What is abortion?

Abortion is when a pregnancy is ended so that it doesn’t result in the birth of a child. Sometimes it is called ‘termination of pregnancy’.

Dr. Eve Abortion Clinic cares for women with an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. We treat women who’ve decided that abortion is the right choice for them, and give advice and counseling to women who don’t know what to do next.

There are two types of abortion treatment, ‘Medical’ and ‘Surgical’ abortion:

1. Medical abortion: The abortion pill

Some women feel that medical abortion is a more natural process. There are two types of medical abortion.

2. Surgical abortion

Surgical abortion involves a quick, minor operation. There are two types of surgical abortion:

Early Abortion Solutions

At our abortion clinic, we schedule each patient privately, so there is minimal waiting to see the doctor.

our abortion clinic provides confidential abortion services because we understand the need for confidentiality.

Abortion Pill at home-Pills by Post

This service is a safe and legal way to end a pregnancy at an early gestation without needing to attend a clinic for treatment. You should contact Dr. Eve on our bookings and information line +27673719591.

If treatment is suitable and safe, abortion pills will be delivered the same day, or we can book you for an alternative treatment in the clinic.

The abortion pill

Medical abortion involves taking two medicines.

The first medicine ends the pregnancy. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down and the pregnancy cannot continue.

The second medicine, makes the womb contract causing cramping, bleeding, and loss of the pregnancy similar to a miscarriage.

Surgical abortion

Surgical abortion involves a minor operation. There are two types of surgical abortion:

Vacuum aspiration can be done with a local anesthetic, sedation, or general anesthetic:

  • Removes the pregnancy by gentle suction.
  • Up to 14 weeks, this can be done with a local anesthetic. The quicker recovery time for this procedure means you can leave the clinic unattended and drive sooner.
  • Up to 15 weeks this can be done with sedation (relaxed and sleepy) or under general anesthetic.

Dilatation and Evacuation – between 15 and 24 weeks of pregnancy.

  • Carried out under general anesthetic.
  • The pregnancy is removed using narrow forceps through the neck of the womb (cervix).
  • You will need cervical preparation on the day of surgery or possibly the day before.

Safe Abortion Clinic-After Abortion Care

Whether you undergo a surgical abortion or take the abortion pill, it’s important to take care of yourself following the procedure. Abortions that take place under the care of a licensed medical professional within a clinic are generally safe procedures with few complications. However, many women will experience some side effects, including abdominal cramps, light vaginal bleeding, nausea, sore breasts, and fatigue.

After abortion care tips

After your abortion, your doctor or clinic will provide you with specific after-care instructions. Sometimes this isn’t enough to reduce unpleasant side effects.

To reduce side effects and increase your comfort after an abortion, you can:

  • Use heating pads, which can ease cramps.
  • Stay hydrated, especially if you’re experiencing vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Have a support system in place, as some women experience emotional changes from the drastic hormone shift.
  • If possible, plan on staying in for a day or two, so that you can rest and recover in the comfort of your own home.
  • Take medication like ibuprofen to lessen cramps and pain.
  • Massage your abdomen at the site of the cramps.
  • Wear a tight-fitting bra to relieve breast tenderness.

Safe Abortion Clinic-Bleeding after an abortion

Many women will experience bleeding after an abortion. During this time period, you may experience days with light to heavy spotting.

It’s also normal to pass blood clots, though passing large clots (the size of a golf ball) for more than two hours is not normal.

Consistent heavy bleeding is defined as going through two or more maxi pads in one hour or bleeding heavily for 12 hours or more. This may be a sign of complications, and especially so if the blood is bright red after the first 24 hours post-abortion, as compared to a darker red, or if it accompanies a stabbing, persistent pain.

Sex after an abortion

After both types of abortion procedures, it’s typically advised that you wait about two weeks before having sex or inserting anything vaginally. This reduces the risk of infection and is an important part of post-abortion care. Call our Abortion clinic for assistance

When you have unprotected sex following an abortion, call your doctor or a local clinic and ask what measures you can take to prevent pregnancy.

If you suddenly experience sharp pain during sex after an abortion, call your local clinic for advice. And if they believe it’s not an emergency, they may still schedule you for a follow-up.

After abortion birth control use

You can get pregnant almost immediately after having an abortion, so you must use contraception right away to avoid pregnancy. Contact our Abortion clinic for more information

If you don’t start contraception immediately after the abortion, wait to have sex until you’ve completed your first week of the contraceptive or use backup contraception like condoms. If your doctor inserted an IUD, it will start to prevent pregnancy immediately, though you should still wait two weeks to prevent serious infections.
