Mifepristone at Clicks: Accessible Medication for Women's Health

Mifepristone is a medication that has revolutionized women’s reproductive health. It is primarily used for medical abortions, which offer a non-invasive alternative to surgical procedures. Mifepristone works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is essential for maintaining a pregnancy. By interrupting this hormone, mifepristone causes the lining of the uterus to thin and the pregnancy to detach.

This process is often followed by the administration of another medication called Misoprostol, which helps end the pregnancy. Mifepristone has been extensively studied and found to be a safe and effective option for terminating early pregnancies, offering women autonomy and control over their reproductive choices.

Your choice may depend on how far along your pregnancy is, the duration of the method. And whether you prefer to be mainly in the comfort of your home or our clinic.

Bleeding after an abortion

It is normal for women to experience some vaginal bleeding, much like menstrual bleeding for a short period after an abortion.

Sex after abortion

When to have sex after an abortion is solely up to you. You can have sex as soon as you feel ready. However, we do recommend that you wait until the bleeding stops, as this will reduce the risk of infection.

Brief Notes

Mifepristone (also known as RU 486) is used to end a pregnancy during the early part of pregnancy. It is used up to week 10 of pregnancy (up to 70 days after the first day of your last menstrual period). Mifepristone blocks a natural substance (progesterone) needed for your pregnancy to continue.

It is usually used together with another medicine called misoprostol. Mifepristone must not be used if you have a rare abnormal pregnancy that is outside the womb (ectopic pregnancy). It will not end the pregnancy in this case. It may cause an ectopic pregnancy to rupture, resulting in severe bleeding.

Mifepristone (Mifeprex) and misoprostol (Cytotec) can be safely prescribed by primary care clinicians in an outpatient setting.
